11 Bizarre Superhero Casting Decisions That Nearly Happened

In this day and age, every major studio is trying to churn out a superhero movie giving almost every star in Hollywood the chance to play one, and it is not hard to imagine the chiseled good looks and well-drilled physiques of today’s starlets playing these demi-gods amongst us.

However, some people just wouldn’t fit the bill of certain characters or would seem so absurd you can’t ever imagine their name being put forward and yet there are a few who came very, very close to being cast. Here we look at some of the most ridiculous.

1. Hulk Hogan As Mr. Freeze

Those of you unfortunate enough to remember the film  Batman & Robin may cringe at the memory of just how bad it was with George Clooney running around in his infamous plastic suit ‘batnipples’ and all included whilst being chased by Arnold Schwarzenegger firing off terrible puns about ice and being cold. It was, categorically, terrible.

That being said, Arnie salvaged something from the comically misplaced character with his deliberate drawl over the lines but had he passed on the role, ex-wrestler Hulk Hogan was next in line for the villain, and he would have relished the poor puns with a certain manic sensibility that would have made things so much worse.

2. Keanu Reeves – Dr. Manhattan

The film Watchmen is extremely close to the graphic novel, and the casting was near perfection, but that could have all been very nearly ruined as director Zak Snyder originally wanted Keanu Reeves to play the ethereal Dr. Manhattan character.

Although Reeves has made a career of playing aloof and distanced characters, Manhattan is a little more regal and otherworldly than Reeves is used to portraying as he tends to go for sulky and damaged and even he didn’t think he was right for the role so he turned it down but would regularly visit the set to see how it was going.
